When a person is disabled and mostly bedridden, after a particularly rough day physically (and a rough couple of years both physically and emotionally) there are scenes like this that help ease the ache of loneliness and fear. I'm allergic to cats, but I don't care if they can caress their dog-mates and cuddle at night on the bed that may mean I have less room, but if I have to go back to the hospital I won't have them so I would rather my sweetlings slept with me and the cats just mean I have "pet blankies" that go on top of the comforter and are easily washed. They're not causing me to get worse. They help make horrible days a little better.
