Classic Christian Rock at its best! Subscribe for more great music!

Formed in 1972 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, by Bob Hartman, Greg Hough, Bill Glover, and John DeGroff, Petra took its name from the Greek word for "rock".

With a style initially similar to The Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Petra's sound evolved into a more energetic, driving rock sound in the early 1980s. By the late 1980s and early 1990s Petra was considered the best-known, best-selling Christian band, winning four Grammy Awards and releasing two RIAA Gold-certified albums. With its music and style, Petra influenced other Christian artists at a time when Christian rock experienced strong opposition from many churches and received little radio airplay.

In more than three decades, the band experienced numerous lineup changes yet released 24 albums, selling nearly 10 million copies, winning four Grammys and 10 Dove Awards. At one point, Petra reached the top position on five Contemporary Christian radio and retail charts simultaneously and was the first band to win more than 20 CCM Magazine Reader's Poll Awards, sweeping every category of eligibility. Petra was the first rock band inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and was the first Christian band whose memorabilia was included in the Hard Rock Cafe restaurant chain. The band toured around the world, playing on every populated continent.

The band announced its retirement in 2005, launching a farewell tour that was recorded for release on CD and DVD in late 2005 and early 2006, respectively. Petra's 33-year career ended with a performance in the early hours of Jan. 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina. Band members subsequently reunited for single concerts in 2007 and 2010, and Hartman and longtime vocalist John Schlitt released an Internet-only album under the name II Guys From Petra in 2007.

In May 2010, a reincarnation of the band's lineup from 198184 — Hartman, vocalist Greg X. Volz, bassist Mark Kelly, keyboardist John Lawry and drummer Louie Weaver — announced they would release a CD featuring re-recordings of hits from that era, as well as containing some new material, and tour in support of the album in the fall.
