This is a video of ex-GWR "Castle" class steam locomotive no 5043 "Earl of Mount Edgcumbe" pulling the Vintage Trains charter train "The Berks and Hants Aquae Sulis" from Solihull to Bath and Bristol, on the morning of 15th October 2011.

The morning was cold and bright, making for near ideal steam video conditions.

The first shot of the train is at Yarnton, north of Oxford, at 8.15 am. the temperature was 2C and the ground was frosty!

Then off to South Hinksey, south of Oxford, where the train had a long stop to take on water and let some faster traffic through. We see diesel shunter D8886 (I think) fussing about in the goods yard while waiting. 5043 departed the loop on time at 9.45, and made a nice noise getting going past us.

Next stop Theale Station to see her pass at speed, and then finally Newbury Station where we again see her working away to get going after stopping for another fill-up.

The train carried the headboard "80th Anniversary OURS".

The name of the excursion comes from the Roman name for Bath, Aquae Sulis, and the name of the GWR line through Newbury, The Berks and Hants Line (which does not go through Hants, by the way! There used to be a line from Newbury to Southampton, but it closed many years ago)

  • The Berks & Hants line is in fact 2 lines, these being the Reading - Taunton line and the Reading - Basingstoke line :)

  • Was good to meet and chat with you at Hinksey! Great shots passing through Theale and Newbury, thanks for posting, very much enjoyed and wish I'd had time to come down there too.

So far I've seen her east of Didcot & at Freshford, will be off to see the return through Swindon later.
