if you're growing them upside down your lights should be on the ground too keeping the plants from curling. you're forcing them to grow against gravity which pretty much negates growing them upside down. the real point of doing it isn't so much for the nutrient transfer as it is that the plant doesn't have to hold itself against gravity meaning that they don't have to focus as much energy on stem strength making your bud danker because the energy is used for the production instead.
I still have an original Topsy Turvy in it's box from when my dad was still alive and I've always looked at it but have never came across a strain that I have wanted to try... as the first poster suggested, lights from the bottom up so that the buds hang straight down and maximize weight by water and gravity. Problem is: more water = more shrinkage.

If you use an aluminum trash can, you can drill a hole in the bottom and mount CFL Light Bulbs. (This way you won't burn your house down)
Mount the topsy turvy from the trash can lid and then your Mary Jane will grow down towards the light.
This is also a really nice way to conceal and outdoor grow.
