@jettrainfan - Athearn used to make Cow and Calf units the older Blue box stuff; not the Genesis products that make today, I have a number of them in my stash. They were Sw1200 A/B you could purchase seperately powered and un powered.
that is correct. The diesel has enough horsepower, but sends the electricity to the traction motors on the other weighted unit to spread the load and create a higher tractive effort without wheel slip.
Looks like a slug / calf - essentally it uses electricity from the main engine to turn the motors giving extra traction as opposed to running two locomotives eating diesel.
