Auroville is a city that is located on the South-East coast of India, about 10 km north of Pondicherry. Based on the work and the vision of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, Auroville is intended as a place for the manifestation of a real human unity in diversity. It presents themselves as a laboratory for the next step in human evolution. As a result of its 40-year-old existence, OHM has filmed a two-part documentary about this particular city.

This universal city was inaugurated in 1968, when young people from 124 countries and from all 23 States of India brought a handful of earth from their homeland in a marble urn, which they laid in the Centre of the city. This symbolized the birth of the city that is dedicated to the unity of mankind.
The current Community of Auroville is formed by more than 100 settlements of varying size, separated by several villages and Temple areas. The activities of the residents will include, among other things, organic agriculture, forestry, educational research, health care, rural development, etc. Currently there are living 2000 inhabitants, coming from 40 different countries. Auroville is planning to extend this number to at least 50,000 inhabitants.

Sri Aurobindo and The Mother
Aravinda Ghose also known as Sri Aurobindo was born on August 15, 1872 in Calcutta. He is one of the most recognized and known Yogis. He is also known as philosopher, poet and scholar, but mostly as a freedom fighter and political leader. In 1910, Sri Aurobindo arrived in Pondicherry where he initially lived with a number of companions. In Pondicherry, Sri Aurobindo however, was predominantly focused entirely on his spiritual development. His group grew companions grew steady, but slowly. It wasn't since 1920's when his follower, Mirra Alfassa also known as The Mother, added herself to the group. Sri Aurobindo and The Mother worked together with the spiritual development which they see as inevitable.

In November 1926, Sri Aurobindo retreated himself from public life. And from that moment on, The Mother, as she was pronounced by Sri Aurobindo, took control over the organisation of the Group of companions and followers who had gathered around Sri Aurobindo.
For almost 50 years, she has been in charge of the Ashram, who in this period came to fruition as a great, versatile spiritual community.

In 1968, The Mother established Auroville, as the city of the future. She sees this as a broader and more universal experiment, where Sri Aurobindo's visions of a more beautiful and better future can blossom for humanity.

  • fantastic

  • Also, spirituality is not the same as morality, and mere humanism and environmentalism does not constitute the Integral Yoga.

The Integral Yoga is panentheistic, not pantheistic. It is NOT about contact with the Earth, but contact with God, who pervades the Earth but also transcends it.

  • This documentary misrepresents the Integral Yoga. The purpose of the Yoga is not human unity or even unity with nature. The Yoga includes the transcendent, and is not a merely horizontal spiritual path (the way the pagans were), but also a vertical one.

To frame the goals of the yoga in terms of unity only does not do justice to the truth and profundity of it.
