Hi all,

Here is PART ONE of TWO of the video documenting the Sutherland Steam Railway's fantastic 2010 WINTER STEAM GALA which ran from February 19th-21st.

The gala ran 3 weeks late due to the seriously bad weather experienced over the last few weeks. (Points had been frozen, rails had been buried, wires had been damaged etc). So finally, on Friday 19th February, the first day of the 3-day event was filmed, resulting in these two videos.

LOCOMOTIVE ROSTER=
Visiting
*4-6-2 Bullied Merchant Navy "United States Lines"
*0-6-0 Terrier Class A1X No11

New Resident
*4-6-0 LMS Rebuilt Patriot "Sir Frank Ree"

Resident
*2-6-2 Large Prairie 61XX No6110
*2-6-2 Small Prairie 45XX No4560
*2-6-0 Churchward Mogul 43XX No5328
*4-6-0 King Class No6009 "King Charles II"
*4-6-0 Grange Class 68XX No6862 "Derwent Grange"
*4-6-0 Black 5 No45156 "Ayrshire Yeomanry"
*0-6-0 Austerity Tank No68075
*4-6-2 Bullied Light Pacific No34051 "Winston Churchill"
*0-6-2 Taffe Tank 56XX No6600

Both visitors came to us from the Fazeley Railway, Tamworth. Thanks to them for sending the locomotives, which have been based at Sutherland Shed's since mid-December. The pair will return home this coming Saturday (27/2/2010). Meanwhile, our BR Black Pannier Tank No5775 will be returning the same day as she has been substituting for the two visitors on their own railway for the same amount of time! We look forward to welcoming 5775 back for a well earnt rest before re-entering into service...we have missed her.

THE GALA
*For this event we decided that we would encorporate something new. Due to this, THREE Demonstration TPO Pick-Ups were sheduled each day, completed at speed by steam locomotives. The apparatus was situated near Ashford Junction Signalbox, allowing enough straight track for acceleration towards the drop.

PROBLEMS
-We had ONE problem over the three days. King Class No6009 developed a valve gear fault on the Fireman's Side and therefore was piloted on her one booked round trip per day by another loco. The loco still featured but was not allowed to work alone.

The rest of the gala went off without hitch and record passenger numbers were recorded. The trains all ran to time and a vast amount of action was spotted over the 3 days.

Comments and Ratings always welcome.

Enjoy!

Part ONE of TWO.

  • is 5775 back yet??

  • Not yet. Should be back March 28th, tis' a tad late. The Merchant and the Terrier are still on the SSR too.

  • ok, will see the Merchant Navy work trains over the SSR??

like an special Southern weekend featuring 11, MN & BoB, + Devon Belle

  • Nope. LoL. The Merchant Navy and Terrier are in storage at the SSR...off the rails. The Merchant in particular ran throughout the winter, almost everytime we took the trains for a run down the line...they were behind the Merchant. It performed well throughout the winter and during the gala. The Terrier also showed its potential during the gala. The pair will not be running again on the SSR, unless they visit again. 5775 will be back on the 28th and will return to service during the Easter hols.

  • Your track is on a wall, can you run a set up like this on the ground?

  • @LeeWoodsPhotography Not too long I hope...it will be a "Garden Railway Running Session" video rather than making up a setting like this one. Planning just to run an assortment of trains. Fingers crossed! Keep an eye out for it within the next month.

  • @LeeWoodsPhotography Thanks mate for the comment. Sorry for late reply. They do on the flat sections but there are some pretty steep gradients on the line, especially in the anti-clockwise direction. Trains try to keep constant but heavy trains slow on the steepest bank unless you "drive a bit harder"!

  • Thanks mate

  • I believe I have mate yh. Thanks for the comments!

  • Two more Post runs for a start lol. Much of the same otherwise...general gala mayhem! lol
