An African American doll wearing a hat that says Lil Monkey on the front has been pulled off Costco shelves after people complained that its politically incorrect.
@Laitalafraise No, my son is white. Yes people used to compair blacks to monkeys, but its 2011. Its a different time. People are equal(even though alot of people are in denial). I think its cute
@DyingOphilia : Your son is black ? Don't you know that white racists, back in the time, used to say that black people were, in fact, animals/monkeys, not humans, so slavery was different for them ? Since black people were officially "not humans", their inferior state was proved... Saying that black people are monkeys implies that they're inferior (to human beings in general and to white people in particular)... These little dolls are only a way of getting the children accustomed to this idea..
the white doll has a head band... that says pretty panda... and the brown doll has a head band that says 'lil monkey" this is the funniest subliminal message ever!
I don't think the doll was intentionally racist but it was misguided. Looking beyond the racial issue, the subliminal message is what offended me. The white doll was a "Pretty Panda" whereas the black doll was "Lil Monkey". Thus again emphasizing that white is beautiful and forgetting to say that black is also beautiful too.
i just heard about this on snopes.com! at first i didnt get it, some people call their kids monkeys, but then i realized the monkeies (& dolls) were brown :/
And yes, white people should be offended by cracker and honky comments unless these white people are actually racist and they would love to "crack" a whip on a black slave or heckle as loud and bitterly unpleasent like a "honking" horning. I'm pretty sure you or I don't want to be refered to as an evil asshole when we're the opposite or some what.
@Rogentx "There are ill-informed people regardless of skin color, ignorance is not limited just to whites"
Who said I believe that. I was explaining the stereotypes that have been put forth by people in general. And to the creators that didn't see the sign and the impact, it is really their fault. And I am not calling you names, they were informal examples.
@Tetzukai I am not offended by words said over the computer nor in person because it is only words and doesn't physcially do anything. I am just thick skinned which happened while working security for long time. So likely you can make it discrete or very obvious on trying to offend me. I do agree, however, there are the worse types of people regardless.
@Tetzukai Now you are referring to name calling so I don't know if that is being to said to me directly or just people in general. So just because a white person doesn't find it offensive doesn't make them any of those names as you mentioned. Ignorance is bliss.
