MD 11 Tribute

A tribute to my favorite plane the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 and without it the 787 or any current aircraft would not as up to date as they are now

Why are so many MD-11's used for cargo? They make great passenger jets. I've ridden them (KLM) myself many times.

Well there are many reasons, I think most airlines just don't like having "Old" aircraft in their fleet, but mostly every airline that uses a 777-200 is also flying a "Older" plane, then there is the "Fuel consumption" and "Short Range" reasons, but both of them don't really point out why MD-11s should be used for Passenger service but I guess it just comes down to opinion, but it won't be too long before some medium class African airline might pick up a few MD-11s to put in Passenger service.

It mostly is, just with the exception of engine power for the 777s have Ge-90s, though I do imagine seeing MD-11 Re engined GeNx Engines sometime soon, It would really give the Md-11 an Extra Edge as a aircraft.

well the last day of construction on the last MD-11 for Lufthansa cargo was on 2001 in April i think

@imac09022008 md11 will never be better than 777, more beatiful yes, but 777 carry the same amount of passenger and waste 10% less fuel.

@RK831 Because they consume so much fuel and are an aging fleet. I live in Oakland, CA and love seeing the FedEx MD-11's flying out of here multiple times a day. They are beautiful bird's indeed! Cant help but wonder if they are flying to Asia, or Memphis...
