And another misconception is that Tesla coils output *small* current in the secondary. That's simply untrue for large coils. They output several amps. The real danger lies in the primary though, which has thousands of peak amps.

As far as I know, this is a popular misconception. Tesla coils don't operate at a frequency high enough to avoid penetrating the human body - which is a rather bad conductor.

The streamers of a powerful enough Tesla coil can cause bone-deep burns, and even cardiac arrest.

So even though it's relatively safe compared to what the "uninitiated" think, I beleive some safety measures must be made in such shows.
