In this concerto Rachmaninov used the words of the Kontakion (Orthodox church hymn) for Dormition (Falling Asleep) of the Theotokos—one of the Great Feasts of the Christian Churches, celebrated on August 28. This feast, which in Catholic Church is called the Assumption of Mary, commemorates the death, resurrection and glorification of Christ's mother. It proclaims that Mary has been "assumed" by God into the heavenly kingdom of Christ in the fullness of her spiritual and bodily existence.
Kontakion:
Neither the tomb, nor death could hold the Theotokos,
Who is constant in prayer
and our firm hope in her intercessions.
For being the Mother of Life,
She was translated to life
by the One who dwelt in her virginal womb.

Das erste Teil des Rachmaninows geistlichen Konzerts »W molitwah neusipajuschtschuju Bogorodizu (Die in Fürbitten unermüdliche Gottesgebärerin)«.
Im Konzert benutzte Rachmaninow die Worte des Kondaks (Kirchenhymnus) zum Entschlafen der Gottesgebärerin.
Kondak:
Die in Fürbitten unermüdliche Gottesgebärerin
und in der Fürsprache unerschütterliche Hoffnung
haben Grab und Tod nicht überwältigt;
denn als die Mutter des Lebens
hat sie zum Leben hinübergeführt,
Er, der einst in ihrem jungfräulichen Schoße Wohnung nahm.
