@Serpchit I agree man. Joey is Musician instead of a " waaooohhh" drummer. I love Joey Baron so so so much, for me is an inspiration, a huge influence. Everything, E VE RY THING he Plays is so unique, he PLAYS the drums, he SOUNDS the drums. ECM? = John Abercrombie/Steve Kuhn BEBOP? = Lee Konitz THRASHGRINDJAZZ? = Naked City KLEZMERJAZZ? = Masada/Bar Kokhba....I LOVE YOU SO MUCH JOEY. Nobody's touches the drumheads like you. (..RESPECT to the old bop drummers too!!)

@frenzychris It certainly gives his style a unique feel.

@RiverKanoff Joey Baron keeps his kick loose for a really good reason. He plays it the way an orchestral percussionist does, using the beater to choke or muffle the drum when he wants to and leaving it open when he wants that big sound. I've worked with this bass drum technique quite a bit over the years. It's super difficult at first but turns out to be great fun and very colorful once you get the hang of it.

Dang it, I'll try again. John Scofield once said something like, "when you start comparing music, you lose the beauty of simply listening to it." he's played with Joey quite a bit. So if you're going to post here about who is better than whom, you're missing the beauty of just listening. That said, Joey Baron is the greatest drummer who ever lived. I've seen him with Naked City, Frissell, Masada and Tim Berne. I HAVE SPOKEN!

amen to the last comment. some sad evidence below of the lack of class in our public discourse these days and a sign of some very young minds comparing Joey Baron to Chambers and Weckl. All great players but as different in their musical paths as night and day. And I'll bet every player mentioned in the comments appreciates Baron's deep musicality. He's a great musician, not because of how fast or complicated he can play, but because of the beauty in his playing. My two cents anyway

Sad. An amazing drum solo spoiled by stupid comments. "Ooooh, Dave fucking Weckl this, oooooh Dennis fucking Chambers that....." etc.... Music wasn't a competition last time I checked......
