These exercises were awesome at getting me mobile again following a Sciatic neural tethering injury, in my lower back. Being a Personal Trainer I have a number of clients that suffer lower back pain and these exercises help them hugely, so give them a go and hope it helps, because believe me I know the pain!

  • moving the stem should help, I have bought a mountain bike and don't get any back problems from that. Good luck with the exercises, hope they help you.

  • Thankyou for your comment and glad to hear it is helping you, keep up the good work and all the best to you.

  • should give credit to Robin McKenzie- a physiotherapist, when you someone elses techniques.

  • @warner003 If I knew these were used by Robin McKenzie then I would give credit, however they where exercises I was given by my Physiotherapist when I injured my back cycling one day. I used them throughout my rehab, and did not mean to offend / upset anyone. They are probarbly quite common exercises used by Physios the world over. I do not even know Robin McKenzie, so can't really credit him, If I don't know it, sorry.

  • Why do you bounce and not hold for the first exercise?

Are your knees together when you bring them to your chest?

  • Bouncing your knees will help loosen the muscles around the Sciatic nerve, like a dynamic stretch, holding the knees would tense the muscle up.

Try to keep the knees together when bringing to chest, yes.

  • McKenzie did not invent these exercises, they come from Yoga. This is another example of westerners stealing methods from eastern cultures and giving themselves credit.

  • hello there and thnx a lot fot the exersices..i want to do a question about the repetitions..how many can i do for each exercise?is there any limit?thnx again.cheers from greece

  • Thank you so much for posting. I was going to the Fiesta Triathlon for fun in SPI, TX but the same problem happened to my back. I was glad that you stated how your back started to spasm after your ride. Thanks for the demo.

  • great vid - i have been suffering what i believe to be sciatica for two weeks. it flared up whilst playing football. i now cant seem to play the game without tweaking it - i've just limped off pitch tonight and am really down about not being able to play.

i dont think my pain is as severe as others, i can raise my leg without much aggravation. i have done a lot of yoga in the past, and am thinking this would be a good way to recover, but am worried it might harm it.

    do you have any advice?

  • The McKenzie method worked like a charm for me, too, had a screaming case of sciatica, but did that back extension one several times a day and within a few days, was nearly normal again. I still do it once, twice or more a day just to maintain and so far, so good.

  • thanks for the upload

  • same story for me m8, last week did a long ride and could'nt move for days...tried 70 mile today on a pretty flat run and ended up lying on my front lawn still clipped in to 1 of my pedals! ....gonna try your exercises but also look at my riding position as well perhaps flip my stem to a more upright position to use my sit bones more...wot u reckon?...
