When biodiesel is created, only about 20% of the soybean is used to create fuel. The other 80%, called soya meal, is conventionally used in animal feeds or discarded. However, University of Guelph researchers see greater possibilities for soya meal that reach far beyond the barnyard. Enter Plant Agriculture professor, Amar Mohanty.
Along with his research team, Mohanty is patenting an innovative way to turn soy-fuel byproducts such as soya meal and crude glycerol, into biodegradable, compostable plastic bags. Not only will these new bags play a role in reducing the impact that regular petroleum-based plastic bags have on the environment, but will also persuade local retailers to adopt this technology.
