i was devasted when i couldn't find this on youtube, so i uploaded a video of the song. i own nothing. enjoy!
Graniteville, Doug Burr
from On Promenade (2007)
just boxcar flower used to follow your daddy
another freighter in from Cincinnati
you were always watching, watching the train roll by
yeah, you know I love you, everything I carry
another red eye, Mobile to Albany,
you were always watching, watching the train roll by.
(Chorus)
So tell me what's going on with graniteville
got your whole town under the sleeping pill
It's a quiet little city, you grew up together
there's a picture looking out your grandmother's window
there's a black train running through the middle of the night,
if it finds us here, well there's nowhere to hide
And if we ever wake up in graniteville,
you know how much I love you and I always will
Trying so hard just to get away
some people want to die in a quiet place
but everybody's always watching, watching the trains roll by
I have a place to go it's never enough
Little hearts paying toll, trains in a rush
our town's always leaving,
leaving the girl goodbye
but every town is small when it comes for you
just like everyone's asleep when it's passing through.
tonight I heard the screaming of a million tons
so wake up pretty baby, turn the light on
tonight's there's something's different, something's gone wrong.
we've been sleeping too long. so long.
(Chorus)
Wake up baby, there's a train a coming
don't you leave me or forsake me
wake up baby there's a train a coming
don't you know how much I love you
wake up baby and hear the screeching
there's a whole town drifting off to dreaming
wake up baby there's a train a coming
winter's leaving, spring has sprung
wake up baby, hear the screaming
whole town dies while it's still sleeping
wake up baby there's a train a coming
don't forget you know I love you

@AsCZspire Hey. My name is Chris. I live in the town of Graniteville, SC which is the subject of this song. Back in January 2005 a train accident happened (long story) which spilled chlorine resulting in the evacuation and 9 deaths. It happened at 2:40 am. It woke me & my wife. We were out of our home for 9 days but we're alive. I'd be out longer than that if it meant no one was killed. But that is what the song is about.
