***I have received a comment from someone indicating that the vodka is not strong enough to kill all bacteria. You will have to decide whether or not to sterilized your bottles and equipment with boiling water first. Do your own research and decide, I'm no expert.
I'm using mine without hesitation and feed the baked goods that I make with my vanilla to my family.

Making your own extract is very simple!

I used:
20 vanilla beans (extract grade is supposed to be better for vanilla extract making)
2 cups (16 oz) or 500ml vodka (any brand)
Clean bottle with cap (I just used the vodka bottle) Dark coloured glass bottle best.

There are a number of recommended methods and recipes online, many of the ones I found recommended at least 8 whole vanilla pods per 8oz (250ml or 1 cup) of vodka.
Split or chop the vanilla pods and put them in the vodka, either in the vodka bottle itself or in another container like a mason jar. They recommend a dark coloured glass bottle or to keep the vanilla in a dark place. Shake the bottle every week or so.
It takes about 4 weeks for it to become usable and will fully mature over time. Many websites say it takes about 6 months for it to be a full strength.
When finished, use this vanilla extract as usual and don't forget to refill the jar once you've removed 80% of the vanilla so your beans continue working as you use up your supply of extract. The same beans will produce vanilla extract for many years.
I haven't found any information on exactly how many years the vanilla beans will last if you keep refilling the bottle. I'm guessing that you will notice a decrease in the scent strength and the colour of the vanilla and then it would be time to replace the beans with new ones.

This is where I found the vanilla beans I bought.

I bought the sampler pack of 30 and you get ten more for free.
They are available online through other companies as well, shop around.

I have never seen alcohol free vanilla extract before, but I did find a link that tells you how to make it with glycerin and water, here is the link:

  • scissors...are you kidding me..omg.

  • @wildshotsintheair Imagine using scissors to cut things! What was I thinking?

  • @yoyomax12 Ive never seen anybody, cut a vnilla bean with scirrors

  • @wildshotsintheair Well I guess you've seen at least one now, lol. I use scissors to cut green beans and green onions tops too. They are used exclusively for food and are washed just like my kitchen knives. Thanks for watching.

  • i would make this but i cant drink vodka :(

  • @funfun223lol You don't drink it, you bake a teaspoon or so into a cake or cookies with it. If you've ever had a piece of cake or a cookie, you have eaten vanilla extract with alcohol in it.

  • @Toon999kinzpengwo You don't drink it, you use a TEASPOON in a whole recipe of cookies or in a cake. ALL baked goods contain vanilla including those given to children. It won't kill them, it won't make them drunk, it won't hurt them to have a fraction of a teaspoon of vanilla in a portion of cake. Comments like this drive me crazy.

  • @PhazonDarkSamus Making your own is also cheaper and much much better. Yes they have vanilla beans at the store here, they cost 7 dollars for three beans. On ebay it was 40 for 14 dollars. Not everyone on youtube lives where you live.

  • No it is not alcohol when it is used for baking. The alcohol evaporates when heated. All that is left is the vanilla flavor. Guess you don't eat fudge either, because it has vanilla.Yum

    Thanks for the video.

  • it looks very amazing but is it still alcaholic

  • Looks like coke when you poured it into the cup near the end xD
