Then please believe, that independant 'gangster' or 'hooligan' films would never have seen the light of day. At least not on the big screen maybe late at night and past the prime time slot

Look at the recent rash of British films they usually do have a below par cast. A cast that really don't do a great job at holding a film together. Please name an actor, a single central character, who alone can sell tickets just by namestake or appearing on posters, television interviews ect.

Look at the memorable classic films that captured the essence of what Britain was and will always be; grey; gritty; tough; depressing; miserable; honest; real; down to earth. You just have to look at the titles released by the British Film Institute. Then ask yourself despite all the gloom still likable and charming characters!! Wonderful.
