Aerospace International Video News

Thales Connectivity Suite Launch 4 March 2010.

On 4 March Aerospace International was invited to the launch of Thales Connectivity Suite in Crawley near Gatwick. This facility is part live in-flight entertainment (IFE) research laboratory, part marketing tool to help airlines select their IFE systems.

With a live satellite communication (SATCOM) system and virtual passengers, airline customers can see for themselves how the system manages demand from voice, data and internet services.

We spoke to Peter Hitchcock, Head of Thales Avionics UK about the exciting breakthroughs in IFE, what Thales can bring to this sector, Smart Apps and the coming use of personalisation in IFE.

The IFE market is now reckoned to be worth some $2bn over the next ten years and is highly competitive as airlines struggle to meet the demands of passengers for not only ever more sophisticated seat-back systems, but also to integrate Wi-Fi, mobile phones, iphones, Blackberries, netbooks and other devices completely seamlessly.

Thales with its background of civil and military avionics is thus well placed to provide these solutions and provide a common cockpit and cabin SATCOM connectivity system, through Inmarsats L-Band SwiftBroadband.

Look out for the May issue of Aerospace International which will feature articles on cabin interiors.
