You may be aware that the Democratic Republic of Congo has been facing a humanitarian catastrophe, with over 5 million killed since the beginning of it's civil war in the mid-1990s.
However, you probably don't know that the root cause of the violence and bloodshed is driven by the desire to control the enormously profitable minerals used to make portable electronics such as cell phones and laptops. Congo holds vast reserves for minerals such as tin, tungsten, tantalum (coltan) that are a staple ingredient in modern gadgets.
