In the final part of this 3-part discussion, General Gavin calls for the disbandment of obsolete entities like the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) in favor of a real military staff to advise the Secretary of Defense (SecDef). This is described in detail in his 1958 book, "War and Peace in the Space Age" (WAPITSA) and is still something we need to do TODAY to fix the Department of Defense (DoD).

General Gavin also calls on trimming the DoD budget by about $16 BILLION each year-- which just happens to be what we waste on an obsolete, un-needed USMC WW2 frontal-beach-assault self/peer validation death cult, re-enactment club.

Moreover, General Gavin explains how "deals" are cut between the service chiefs to support their racketeering "cash cows" like bloated supercarriers and how wasting money on this crap resulted in the Soviets beating us into space with the world's first satellite, Sputnik in 1957.
LTG Gavin also questions if ANY President of the United States (POTUS) can reign-in the corrupt DoD; he says its possible but so far to date JFK and SecDef McNamara were unable to over-ride the Military, Industrial Congressional, Think-Tank Complex (MICC-TT) lacking the professional military staff he advocated in WAPITSA in 1958. McNamara, lacking in-depth military experience himself made many bad decisions foreshadowing the later Rumsfeld who was equally ignorant and imbued with push-button "RMA" firepower warfare

Clearly, General Gavin shows the blame and the responsibility for America having the most expensive immoral & incompetent military in the world is the fault of the military. Congress must intervene and reform our military since those in uniform are unwilling.

Program 569: Military Security Blankets
U.S. Army General James M. Gavin discusses his belief that the security of the United States no longer depends on weapons, armed forces, and holding areas of strategic value around the globe, but rather on less tangible factors such as the people's standard of living and the overall economic health of the nation. With Harry S. Ashmore, John Cogley, Sidney Holt, George McTurnan Kahin, Donald McDonald, and Robert Rosen. Mar. 10, 1972. [CSDI program number 569; UCSB tape number A8185/R7]
