In a wide-ranging speech, with his characteristic range of allusions, President Hexter addressed numerous issues of social justice and political conscience, beginning with the recent economic crisis. His main theme was the responsibility of intellectuals in time of crisis: he denounced the unrelenting negativism and demagoguery of opponents of President Obama, and urged students to resist the simple answers, rumors, and calumny, and instead to recognize the complexity of reality and seek the truth. In the concluding portion (seen here), he urged students to learn from history and take the example of the Dreyfus Affair to heart.
