Turkeyjerky214 has a very good point. It is nearly impossible to use a bow on a "flat, Les Paul" neck, and quite a bit easier on a "radiused, Strat" neck. Look at cellos, violins and the like; they all have VERY VERY radiused necks, so that you can strike a single string without dragging the bow across other strings.
I have a simple rule for bowing; play chords on Les Pauls and play solos (or chords) on a Strat. Or get mind-numbingly good at muting sets of strings on the Les Paul.

the les paul jimmy uses when he plays this has a bowed bridge. that's why it so hard to get it to sound right on a regular guitar

If that's an EPI than I have that exact same guitar. I am in the middle of trying to learn that very same solo but can't seem to get the bow to sound right as I slide down or up or even get any sound for that matter. Would you happen to have any tips?
sry bro. Its just kinda.. boring. Sounds like feedback, sorta like the bow wasn't really needed. Might have been cooler if quicker or if it was layered into something else.

No problem, but may be you should say the same thing to Jimmy Page.

No, it is a very cheap guitar - SX or Shelter - I am not very sure about correct brand name - but it is very similar to the original Gibson Les Paul

It depends on the way you play off course. But in general you will loose some of the wires and that is all. But anyway, a violin bow is something very cheap. Around US$ 20.00.
