Harlan Gardner is saying that it takes courage to live openly as a lesbian in an unapproving and hateful society, not that his granddaughter chose to be a lesbian. Many things we have no control over, like our skin color, take courage to live with. Choice is not implied by bravery. Bravery is a choice. Do you have the courage to live according to your own beliefs, without insisting others are just like you? You don't show it.
