The original Bike Friday was not specifically designed as folding bike, more a bike that you can take with you and that goes in a suitcase. The chain can fall off when unfolding, but Bike Friday salesguy Walter Lapchynski demonstrates a technique that keeps it on - pretty well! See this channel for other clips on folding a double and triple chainring model without dropping the chain.

  • as long as the chain doesn't get caught up on the chainring nuts and/or the hinge pin bolt head, it should work no problem with a double or triple chainring.

  • Is there not enough room to use your foot to get the chain on? A bit challenging (I get it to work about 40% of the time), but it doesn't require a glove, either.

  • Yes, you can use your foot!

  • Actually, I take the z-wrench from the water bottle holder and use it as a hook.

  • On my NWT 27 speed I put the chain on the largest gear on the front and smallest on the rear. When I fold and unfold there is enough of the chain lying across all three gears to pedal forward and re-establish the proper chain position. Still, I wish this was something I didn't have to worry about each time I fold.

  • any premium folding bike should have an internal geared hub and chain guides. just my .02. thanx to you guys girls for this demo

  • What if he wants to ride cross country or keep up with the fast guys? Get a Friday dude! :o) Horses for courses, steeds for deeds ...

  • Funny!, Don't have any problems like that on my Brompton....lol

  • LOL!!!

    Get a Brompton, dude!

  • OMG

  • Hey Walter! Hyacinthe says hi..lol.

  • Terrific. But what about those of us with front derailleur models? Same thing? Because the chain's always getting hung up on the FD.
