These had the oppertunity to be such good cars but the engines are so shit. I was looking into buying one but the reliability from land rover on these freelanders is just disgusting.

It looks like your video was "borrowed" by someone to make an advert for service manuals. Go look at this video: EhgjV2WpI0E

Simple test first. With the engine off and the cover removed, hit the plastic plenum with the palm of your hand. Hear the vibration. It is amplified 10 fold with the engine running. Noise will resemble a noisey lifter or a possible "knock" in the top end. Usually heard loudest on the drivers side.

I have a 2003 Freelander that had the same exact noise. It would get louder as idle increased. Initially, I contributed it to a noisey lifter. After tearing apart the top end, it turned out to be inside the plastic intake manifold. It was the automatic choke. There is a long assembly with doors to each runner. It was necessary to take off the access door on the underside of the intake (plenum). The screws are a T15 bit, but do not come easily. reseal the door with black RTV. No more noise

Big End, thats exactly what my Alfa 156 sounded like. You were lucky to get the 3,300 for it.

just a quick update, i sold the freelander 6 months ago for 3300 to a gentleman who was going to try to rebuild the engine. when he picked up the freelander, it was still running and driving fine (albeit with a lot of noise). basically, i could have kept driving with the noise until the cylinder sleeve completely slipped and the engine seized, which could have been in the next 10,000 miles, or 10. who knows. anyway, i have not yet heard back from him, but i'll keep you guys updated! =)

I had few freelander mrk 1's and i never had any probs
had a 1.8 when i was doing heavy miles. i done close to 60 k miles with it and only thing needin replaced was tires and not even tht needed done much. i know the 1.8 k engine got bad review but if u don't hash them they last as long as any other engine.
now 2.5 bmw v6 model is even better. and the onl problem with it is same as all freelanderes for off road is ground clearnce.
i can't say anything bout diesle engine tho never had one

there are far too many freelanders with engine problems for this to be coincidence or, as you suggest, neglect. these engines are just more prone to failure.
