DC and Robin talk about their art in text so you have to read the post. Sowa Mai: so tell us about your piece
Dancoyote Antonelli: this piece suffers from a contextual disconnect
Sowa Mai: yeah it looks out of place too

Dancoyote Antonelli: things referencing the material world are less real in this space than in their native space
in SL things referencing the material space become symbols
no exceptions
the transit into virtual space converts material objects into symbols
symbols are less real in this space than objects without that material world connection
Dancoyote Antonelli: it is not the piece that is out of place
it is the fake sky, the fake land, the fake clouds
all these things are poor representations of something that is native to another set of conditions
the piece is not a representation of anything
it is not a symbol
symbol
it is the genuine artifact

Sowa Mai: I am what I am
Dancoyote Antonelli: ?
Sowa Mai: Popeye
Dancoyote Antonelli: yes I am aware of Popeye
how is it relevant?
Sowa Mai: lol I am what I am is the same as being the genuine artifact
Dancoyote Antonelli: indeed

Dancoyote Antonelli: art that mimics material world art
is a simulation of art
Sowa Mai: so this is art, not a simulation, just art
Sowa Mai: ?
Dancoyote Antonelli: it is a secondary aesthetic assembly, that is the result of a work of art
Sowa Mai: ok I need some explanation on that
Dancoyote Antonelli: it is like one keyframe in an long animation, one act in a week long performance
let me show you the primary artwork
Sowa Mai: ok

Dancoyote Antonelli: so the secondary artifact is the assembly
the primary artwork is the tool used to produce and alter the assembly
Sowa Mai: I get it
Dancoyote Antonelli: one of which is up here with us
Sowa Mai: Second Life is the primary artwork
Dancoyote Antonelli: no
SL is a medium
the control surface here is the art
Sowa Mai: did you make this control panel too?
Dancoyote Antonelli: do you know circuit bending?
Sowa Mai: no
Dancoyote Antonelli: yes this control panel is unique
Dancoyote Antonelli: I produced this in 2006, working with one of the best programmers in SL
Sowa Mai: what does it control?
Dancoyote Antonelli: no others exist, it is not a consumer product
circuit bending is the art of hacking kids toys
people alter existing circuits
Sowa Mai: that sounds like fun

Dancoyote Antonelli: and produce things that the original engineers did not expect or anticipate
in this case I am hacking the SL interface
this series of control surfaces I call the "Grail"
it allows me to manipulate groups of objects
individual changes are not so important
but as changes overlap with each other
there can be a rich set of combinations that sometimes results in poetry
I "perform" these changes over a long period of time
many performances are fast in the space of an hour
I call this low frequency performance
this many seem pedantic to you
but in practice it has proven to be a very rewarding and theoretically rich method
Sowa Mai: I like it
Sowa Mai: the artifact looks really cool

Dancoyote Antonelli: it serves an aesthetic function
Dancoyote Antonelli: that is not contained in the artwork

Sowa Mai: well thanks for explaining it
Dancoyote Antonelli: my pleasure
thanks for listening
really most people only see the artifact

Sowa Mai: Robin Moore is here now do you want to come down and hear what he /she has to say?
Dancoyote Antonelli: as long as my candid opinion can be valuable
Dancoyote Antonelli: will it?
Sowa Mai: I don't know where and when to issue candid opinion so i try to wait

Sowa Mai: I think its important for artists to be able to explain their work
Dancoyote Antonelli: I think it is what makes an artist
Dancoyote Antonelli: different from a dilettante

Dancoyote Antonelli: I live in a studio critique world
Sowa Mai: some feel that it can break the illusion, make it easier on the viewer , remove their opportunity for interpretation
Dancoyote Antonelli: valid critique

Dancoyote Antonelli: when an artist does a work
it is art
when they release it
it becomes culture
and ceases to be art
culture SHOULD be examined
and critiqued
this is a skill
something one practices and studies
only my opinion

Sowa Mai: Wonder what an art critic earns? Saltz: A review in an art mag. earns a critic $125; an article, $800.
Dancoyote Antonelli: of course
not all value can be calculated in dollars and cents
in fact, most good things cannot
also
the fact that only a few people are scholars in now way diminishes the value of scholarship
the same could be said about nuclear physicists
and doctors
Sowa Mai: increases, I would imagine
Dancoyote Antonelli: the time we are in presently
is about the reexamination of value
what is value
?
