Jack will always be the Joker to me. I was still surprised the new film went with Heath Ledger. It's sad that he died so young, but I don't think the Joker was even Ledger's best role, and I felt they changed the character dramatically from what he was in the comics and on the TV show.

Nolan's batman and joker are BARELY what they are in the comics.
Burton might have never looked to the comics.
But his are more accurate.
Burton did better with the joker.
But both directors have failed with batman.

Both great perfomances in different tone of films. No one is better. Both just great in their own way. For me....since I saw Jack first he just has the slight upper edge if I HAD TO CHOOSE.

@FuriousGentleman so what your saying is that Jack is not a good enough actor to be from Hollywood. well that settles that Ledger wins the joker contest everyone. O by the way Burton never looked to the comics for any sort of lead into what the characters where suppose to be like, in doing so he ruined the batman franchise until the Batman Begins movie came out.

I love them both....They both portray joker very differently... Ledger portray Joker as a person with a very dark personality and very sinister criminal, the ones that you will immediately thought of as a criminal that is directly along theme with nolan's dark knight...while Jack portray Joker as a joker, a clown like what the name has suggest, Joker who has a better close relation with the comics itself...which i think burton's trying to follow

I like Jack. Truly I think the debate between Nicholson and Ledger is a generational one. In 1989 when Tim Burton's Batman came out there was no internet, the 1989 generation had no instant massive media voice of the internet and face it, 1989 generation doesn't blog as much. Ledger's generation has the masses opinion in every corner from a generation that mostly knows Ledger. Not giving Nicholson a fair chance because they just don't know his performance.

that has a lot to do with writing then the actor.

The two are very good!!

Hmm i always thought they were great in different ways, but when watching the 1989 film i noticed when Jack's Joker falls, he screams... when Heath's Joker falls in TDK he fucking laughs! That decided it for me...HEATH IS THE JOKER =D
Come on, man, take the long view for once.
Ledger's joker is another freak from Hollywood.
A sick terrorist who disguise himself as a nurse, can not be the joker. Only a real man can.
JACK IS THE JOKER ! THE ONE AND ONLY !

even though I am a long time fan of the 1989 film, the Dark Knight is the superior film, and Ledger's performance as the Joker is superior to Nicholson's overall. Nicholson will always be the Joker to me. It is difficult to compare both actor's roles, since the Joker role in 1989 is much different in 2008.
