I was in Te Poe during this time, and we did this as a tribute to O Tahiti E. We learned it in Tahiti from the dancers of O Tahiti E. They are known for being one of the most traditional groups, and actually are involved in the politics of keeping Ori Traditional. They also did it with the paint. Because of French oppression, Ori doesn't have the same kind of documentation as say hula, but Uncle Joel and some of the leading researchers in Tahiti made sure this was Traditional.
