Even when it comes from the grid, it's still cleaner than gasoline. The reason is because electric motors are very very energy efficient (85%) compared to gasoline engines (20%) so they use far less energy *per mile*, and therefore less pollution is created back at the power plant *per mile driven* than the gasoline engine produces. And remember grid power is only 45% coal, not 100%.
