United Nations, New York, 29 June 2009 - The Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Alain Le Roy has told the United Nations Security Council that demand for peacekeeping services around the world is still rising.
Presenting an overview of UN peacekeeping operations, Mr Le Roy said that some missions located in the world's most difficult terrain lack some of the most fundamental things. He said the provision of more machinery such as helicopters would help to ensure greater efficiency.
Mr Le Roy added that while the demand for the UN's peacekeeping services continues to grow, in the current global environment financial restraints "press us to review the basic models of peacekeeping - costs, troop numbers and capability requirements cannot all continue to rise indefinitely".
