One morning in March of 2006, Sara discovered this clump of garter snakes in our backyard. They had recently come out of hibernation and were mating in what scientists call a "breeding ball".
They find their mate by forming this pile of snakes and somehow find their way. We haven't seen this happen since that day, though we still have lots of garter snakes hibernating in our yard each winter.
This footage still gives me the willies.
