A black-footed ferret, "06-125", moves her 2 kits from one burrow to another. BFFs are one of the rarest mammals in North America. Recently, sylvatic plague has threatened the most successful reintroduction site in the Conata Basin, South Dakota. Researchers are dusting vast areas of prairie dog towns to kill the carrier fleas, and trapping the BFFs to vaccinate them directly against the plague.

  • 06-125? What's that supposed to mean? Do black footed ferrets have social security numbers now?

  • @TaiFerret The number means the ferret was the 125th wild born ferret tagged in 2006. No, they don't get to collect social security benefits! ;-)

  • Oh man oh man oh man, that is sooo awesome!!!

  • They are just too cute for words, aren't they?

    :-)
