Nine Pittsburgh elementary schools compete in the 2010 "Colors of the Rainbow" semi-finals of Dancing Classrooms Pittsburgh, sponsored by Mercy Behavioral Health. The ballroom dancing competition for youth, held on Dec. 11, 2010, was the culmination of 10 weeks of in-school instruction based on the methods of Pierre Dulaine and featured in the films "Mad Hot Ballroom" and "Take the Lead."

Six couples from each of nine Pittsburgh Public Schools and Pittsburgh Catholic Schools were chosen from more than 400 students who participated in Dancing Classrooms Pittsburgh in the fall 2010 semester. The young dancing stars performed the Merengue, Foxtrot, Rumba, Tango and Swing.

Four teams advanced to Colors of the Rainbow final competition on May 21, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Pittsburgh, PA

The prevention program of Mercy Behavioral Health, part of the Pittsburgh Mercy Health System, sponsors Dancing Classrooms Pittsburgh.

  • Wow, such great work from such young and impressionable people. Congradulations to all involved and keep up the work. Major, major impressions to last a lifetime!

  • That was inspired. It was a wonderful way to show the world how dance has no boundries. How it reminded me of dance class in the 50's; except for the white gloves, it is back in style. Great program. Loved the music too! B. Morton, Pittsburgh
