The problem is, the literal doesn't always make 'good sense'. There are many tensions in doctrine based on the literal; one good example is the Arminian/Calvinist controversy which has been unresolved for over 400 years now. Like all literalists, you fail to ask the one pertinent question: what standard may properly be used to determine the truth of an interpretation which uses a mixture of literal and allegory? Answer: same truth criteria as any interpretation.
