Speaker: Professor Niall Ferguson
Chair: Professor Arne Westad
This event was recorded on 18 January 2011 in Old Theatre, Old Building
'Nixon goes to China' shattered the façade of Communist unity and dug the United States out of the hole it found itself in at the end of the 1960s. Critics have seen Nixon and Kissinger's policy as morally compromised, but was it actually the key to America's victory in the Cold War? Niall Ferguson is Philippe Roman Chair in History and International Affairs at LSE IDEAS for 2010-11.

  • worth watching video

  • nixon was subiected to political brutality? what kind of fruit is this guy on?

  • detente- the proper solution to employment/politics/economics big settled business not seriously innovating looses some title to regulation (ala utilities); entrepreneurial small business gets a very free hand.

  • @OneWorldHistory The history of the C20th begs to differ.

  • The world is one place. Our little sphere. Ferguson focuses on differences, not the singularity of our situation.

  • Nah, not a dumbass. Simply fixated on east vs. west.

  • @randall5691 Amazing that you can listen to that entire lecture (assuming you listened to it) an that's what you come away with. Amazing. I'd say Ferguson made a pretty good case for Kissinger. Get a job hippie.

  • Thanks LSE ideas and thanks youtube for giving me the opportunity to listen, 5 days after it happened, of one of the most intelligent people of the world talking about matters that i am interested in. I´ve never had a chance to go to Hardvard, but the internet has given me the opportunity to educate myself in a very interesting, fast and ilimited way.

The Chinese communist know what they are doing by forbidding youtube: It is one of the tools with most potential for changing society!
