I opened some old hard disk drives to watch the internal components operating.
With the cover off the drive does not survive for long.
I would not recommend doing this with your good drives.

  • Definitely an old WD Caviar, judging by the spindle motor and voice coil seek test.

  • I think so. Don't have it anymore so can't check.

  • I think its some sort of reset.

    Its gets damaged quickly when the cover is off becasue dust gets in. The fly height of the heads may also be affected becasue of the different air flow.
