I can't imagine that a professor would discourage you based on your gender! That is insane! I studied in a female dominated field, 5 guys to let's say 400 girls..., but those guys were definetly encouraged, it was like: yeah there is a guy in our workgroup!

There was a girl in my graphic design class who was an architecture major and she was amazing! The kind of things she was able to conceptualize and model were so cool.

here architecture is not strictly men's field so it depends on a country.. i graduated in women dominated field (90+% women over men) and i always been comfortable studying so it's more a woman in men's field thing. depends on a person - many of my female friends went for a strictly male profession (e.g. programming) and were quite successful in studying and majoring in such disciplines.
