Back then the equipment was 100 times more expensive than salaries, so you had more people working on their design, and getting the most out of the equipment. Kind of the reverse of what it is today.

Do you have more videos like this?

@dcs0582 Hey there...I used to test tape drives at STC. I loved them. What cool machines. I loved Christmas time in unit test, because the senior techs would program the start-stop times to make the drives sing "jingle bells"...Of course we never could make a disk drive to save our souls..... Imagine a company that pioneered scsi, disk drive and what became cds.

How old is this tape drive?
-
so theres a vaccume pump which sucks the tape?
-
IBM system 38 and AS/400 tape drive units did this. Put the tape in, then whoosh with a vaccum cleaner sound where it sucked the tape onto the second reel.

Cool yes, but honestly, autothreading is not new. I worked with STC 9-track units back in 1988 that would autothread quite successfully.

I got the chance to work with this equipment when I came to work for a brokerage house in NYC. I was a Tape Pool Operator.
