Call them demolition derby astrophysicists: NASA scientists in Mountain View deliberately crashed an unmanned rocket into the moon on October 9th, 2009. Their goal? To find water, in the form of ice, which could one day support a moon base. On November 15th, 2009, they announced they had found it. QUEST looks at the planning and run-up to the big event.s.

Because it cost $80 million.

Nothing falls in a straight line, synchronization of high velocity objects traveling at semi-elliptical orbits to do exactly what you want to do is where the complication comes in.

This was a very informative video. What I don't understand though, is why are we investing time and energy researching for eventual moon colonization when its apparent its a hostile environment, being hit with meteorites all the time with no atmosphere to protect anything. How long would a "moon base" actually last?
