A truth commission after the internal conflict blamed most civilian deaths on the military government but very few cases have actually made it to court.

Twenty years later, El Salvador is still struggling to recover from the conflict that nearly tore it apart.

The village of El Mozote is the site of one of the worst massacres, and it is from there where the Mauricio Funes, the country's president, issue an apology for the conflict.

But is it enough to heal the wounds that run deep among his people?

Al Jazeera's Rachel Levin reports from Morazan department, El Salvador.

  • Thanks for mentioning that the US government bankrolled the right wing regime in El Salvador and it's death squads.

Sadly, it is only another chapter of the dark history of capitalist-imperialism.

  • They should bring all those guilty of crimes against the people of El Salvador to trial and give the people the justice they have waited so long for their slain loved ones. Too bad D'Aubuisson is dead already and cant be tried, if anyone should have be convicted, he should be the first if possible to do so posthumously.

  • Thanks Allmighty, we aren't in war... but we still fave problems from the war. Please, don't make war... war is always a loss for humanity.

  • but.. damn Doomsday Clock!

  • It makes me nostalgic for the good old days when the US was bringing Democracy to South and Central America, along with the little Islands we got sugar and bananas from.

  • The U.S funded and trained right-wing death squads and mercenaries, and has the blood of tens of thousands of central Americans on its hands.

America even paid for a whole academy, i.e "The School of the Americas" specifically to train these murderers and killers. It is time the U.S pay reparations for its crimes against the Guatemalan and Salvadoran peoples... shame on America, shame on the murderers of Oscar Romero and countless other dissidents, trade unionists, and students.

  • The US government should be put on trial too for getting involve.

  • that mother fucker John Dimitri Negroponte needs to be charged with war crimes. he was behide it all as ambassador of Hunduras at the time of the civil war in El Salvador. he controled the death squads in central america

  • Man, I love the El Salvador. The most humble people on earth and still has open wounds due to the selfishness of politics. GOD bless forever the souls that survived and share the stories of that era to understand the depth of human history. I was just a a kid living in El Salvador when the war was going on.

  • Why does al hazeera always show bad things and none a minumun about the beauties of El Salvador? Or did I miss a clip
