@hanrinch ... I think you missed my point.
It doesn't really make a difference. Once the framerate goes past 60, most peoples eyes are unable to tell the difference between 70 and 200. It's human biology.
Also, framerate is relevant to refresh rate, when speaking of computer games. Meaning, if your PC handles a maximum refresh rate of 75Hz, the maximum framerate it will detect for the max quality that your monitor can handle will be 75 FPS, even if in-game framerate give higher numbers.

they are similar in spec except 9600gt's shader are only half of 8800gt which certain game like bad comapny/modern warfare/duke nukem would take advantage on more shader despite both have same rop/bus width/datapath width/ram&core clock speed. but on game that's texture/pixel/polygon intensive(ex: crysis/far cry/stalker/lost planet) th higher clock 9600gt perform just better than 8800gt. voodoo card can run quake2 like gts 250 but the later card is far faster in framerate count(50 vs 2000fps).

@hanrinch The older games you mentioned aren't that taxing on the system, so of course there wouldn't be any difference in performance between the 8800GT and the 9600GT.
You might as well have said, "a Voodoo 2 graphics card runs Doom 2 the same as if I used a GTX 250".

so far i know that the reference 9600gt i had is 36c at idle&55c at furmark(rom temp: 29c/90f) while 8800gt kept above 50c at idle and 95c at furmark test, that's all that matter. it shown 9600gt had clearly better thermal control than 8800gt(of cause smaller die space did help out a lot) as for the graphical performance 8800gt does not able to take advantage over 9600gt in older game like fear/doom3/far cry. it only outperforms 9600gt in shader intensive game like bfbc&cod mw

@hanrinch The idle fan speed is constantly adjusting, based on what the temperature sensors feel is needed.
Higher idle fan speeds mean your card, according to the NVidia control panel and thermal sensors, is getting too hot and needs more work to cool down.
Graphical performance between the cards may be similar on lower resolutions, but any game that is more taxing graphically, at a resolution higher than 1024x768, the 8800GT shows a clear advantage.

for some reason i think 9600gt reference cooler looks better than 8800gt reference. also better thermal control and larger fan area. also higher idle fan speed (40%vs25%) and higher air flow rating. not to mention it has same copper based heatsink like 8800gt reference which add more advantage in cooling. but graphical performance....only to be acceptable with its price range :(

@sibenikkk Nah, tbh I got tired of stationary computers. Always something wrong. Have been using laptop for quite some time, and haven't got a single problem.

@duelistxistenz mine is too, did you solve it ?
i have a problem, i bought this card by online shopping last year, now i live in india , while i play ANY game in my computer for sometime there will be some black cuttings appearing on screen, like long triangles whose base's on the sides of the screen and some times the game stops or the system crash. this card uses a 6 pin power supply but i have used an adapter fr my 4 pin 500w power supply.is it some manufacturing defect?or any of the props listed above?what should i do?

@akh00il Sorry about the late reply, though it seems like your card may be dying (perhaps due to heat? India occasionally has freezing winters, though I remember being there during summer - ouch!)
Hope you've somehow solved your problem, I've recently moved to another country also.
