@pobinr who said anything about compositional substance? Its not technicalities that make this song great, or any music great. You think its easy to compose brilliance? Simplicity is often more beautiful than complexity. Get a clue.

The live version is the BEST... greatest solo ever. Travels album is full of Pat's best solos... ever.

@pobinr but this isn't a piss contest between bach and metheny, is it?

@pobinr have you ever heard about the beauty of simplycity ??
Your comment only shows how much of an intellectual person you take yourself, and how this only allows you to fall for the complex things. Certainly everybody has the right to like and dislike wathever they want, but always maintaining respect for the people who don't think like you. With that said, I must say that this song is not about time signature, or chord progression, but about intensity and development. Best Regards

@pobinr I love Bach, Debussy, Tchaikovsky and Chopin. I love Pat too. And I heard all of them played in elevator.

That's the point, it's meant to be spare-sometimes you can say more with less. My first love is classical music -but this, like a lot of his stuff, is lovely.
Offramp was the first Metheny Group record I bought, 1983, in college. I listened to this track non-stop over and over nearly all night long, through headphones and loud. Could not get enough of this song, changed my standards for what qualifies as good music forever. Still love this song, still gives me goosebumps. Have seen Pat over 30 times since 1986, twice last year for the Orchestrion tour. In a world with much to be concerned about this music stands as an oasis of wonder & amazement.

This is one his best. If I knew how, I would put my train videos with it on YouTube. So many things to say about this piece. The base line is the most intriguing I have ever heard. There is a transition in the piece a change of Phase that changes mood but maintains the spirit. The tune is always there but it is being improvised all the way through. I hear harmonies that make me sense being on a bus or a train. At the end there is real sense of arrival. “I am going with You.
