It is estimated that 50% of South African adults cannot read and write as a result thousands of parents are unable to read to their children. Addressing this is the the Run Home to Read (RHTR) programme, a mother-tongue family literacy programme run by Project Literacy. Project Literacy has more than 30 years of experience in Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) provision, targeting illiterate and semi-literate adults in South Africa. RHTR gives caregivers in rural areas the training and tools to develop their children's early literacy skills at home. The project aims to develop a culture of literacy in rural areas without access to formal ECD centres so that children can perform well once they join formal schooling. Adults with low level literacy skills are trained how to read to their children at home, giving them a renewed sense of confidence. The first programme was rolled out in Limpopo, South Africa in June 2006. Since then, the project has expanded to Soshanguve, and in May will be starting in Mpumalanga. In 2011, RHTR will reach 750 families.
