It's interesting, watching this you may get the impression that the average english soccer fan was in some way cultured. Ironic when you compare this to the cheap and tacky Italian TV introduction. Perhaps this was the greatest achievement of the opening credits.

Best world cup theme period! There has never been one so invigorating before or since. And despite it being the worst tournament probably ever I always remember it vividly thanks to Pavarotti!

Yes everything about Italia 90 was great, apart from the football. I have some recollection of that World Cup but not a lot, ie the opening match where Roger Milla scored against Argentina, Packie Bonner's heroics, Gazza crying and the dour final. Twenty years ago now..... I'm definitely getting old!

@culchie1982 You're right. If it hadn't been for England's exciting matches, we would barely recall it. Apart from the final, USA '94 was much, much better. What Italy had, though, were great venues and great cities, and heaps of fabulous culture. I was in Florence in April 1990 and it was magnificent.

Christ! Was that it? How the memory plays tricks. Two silly tarts mincing around dressed in "gold" and some boring stock footage from previous tournaments. Bloody awful.

As far as I remember that World Cup was terrible, lowest amount of goals scored and a terrible final as well.
