a) Yes, there is a lot of use for laying it down parallel. You usually don't have a whole day to build a bridge during a war. That is what the river boats are good for. To put the pieces together. This way is at least 10x faster than laying it into water piece after piece.
b) A digger takes no more than 5 minutes to dug slipways. Actually Tatra T-815 has optinal front showel, so the pontoon carrier can do it by itself in most terrains.

6ab8k, I speak from experience of the 1971 liberation of Bangladesh, where the Indian Army crossed the most number of river tributaries in any war or that scale.
a) there is no use for laying down pontoon platforms PARALLEL to each other (how is that going to help you CROSS the river)
b) when are you ever going to find nice, pre-dug slipways for trucks to drive down backwards???

Tatry - jednička. Ale skutečne to posoudí jen někdo kdo se v ní svezl. Já jezdil s 815 (8x8) a 148. A těch debilů si nevšímejte...
