In this short clip of the Amos and Andy show we see the Kingfish, Andy, Amos and Calhoon dealing with being gay (and "fighting" that fact). Long before Seinfeld tackled the issue of being Gay (not that there's anything wrong with it), we see that the issue of being gay was 1st addressed in this classic (albeit controversial) television series from the 1950s. Pioneering in 1st addressing this issue in a time when even married couples on television slept in twin beds this was a bold step. They deal with this not directly, but by implication. Shocking by today's standards? No. Shocking by 1950's standards? I would say - absolutely. This was the only episode where the issue was even implied.

  • Not a gay reference at all. Kingfish (who's actual character name was George Stevens, Kingfish was the office he held in their lodge, The Knights of the Mystic Sea) had a long history of scamming them for money and only "loved" them as part of whatever scam he was attempting to pull at the time. They were all wise to him.

  • I used to watch Amos and Andy. I'm sure Kingfish had a reason for telling them he loved them, probably wanted cash to get himself out of a mess and figured if he professed his love they'd help him out. I've heard all the rhetoric about the 'making fun of negroes' as they were called back then, but Kingfish was funny, Andy was cute, Amos was fat, Calhoun was intelligent, the wife was pretty. A well-rounded cast of characters. If white guys hadn't started this could we still enjoy their talent?

  • i first thought this was a joke, that someone dubbed the voices...but now, i'm really not sure at all...

  • I thought that Bill Cosby bought the rights to all Amos & Andy bits and destroyed them all.

  • Nope, not gay, just saying that people aren't true to their words. He is saying he loves them as a friend and they all know he uses them when he needs to.

  • (not that there's anything wrong with it) LMAO

  • perhaps the kewlist routine I ever saw!

  • Kingfish was married to Sapphire. Amos was married to Ruby. Andy Brown's girlfriend was Queenie. I never saw any particular gal for Algonquin J. Calhoun the lawyer. Nobody was represented a being gay back then. That was taboo for TV.

  • affectionate & masochistic: but poor

    defensive skills.

  • @ChrisRJ I agree. I believe you would have to be gay or really seeking. even out of context this has nothing relating homosexuality
