Synscape is a soundscape that responds to colour. :)

It's quite a basic patch I created with the programming languages Max/MSP and Jitter. :)

I know it's not perfect yet, it needs to be smoother and I need to tweak it some more but I just wanted to give you a demonstration! This was my first Max patch and I am really proud of it!

A user/performer clicks and drags the mouse over an image panel (in this case the panel contains a colour wheel), and the sound morphs as the colours change.

* The smaller box to the right of the colour panel shows the colour of each pixel.

* There are 12 individual hue soundscapes - you can see their separate volume faders at the bottom of the screen - and 3 dark/bright/light soundscapes in addition, which overlay the hues depending on the luminosity value. Dark colours = dark sounds. Whiteish colours = wispy sounds.

* The low pass filter is exactly what it says! ;) It responds to saturation information. You'll notice that the sounds generally become duller towards the centre of the panel (until the white creeps in with the wispy twittery noise at the very centre). Duller colours = duller sounds. Bright colours = bright sounds.

Hmmm what else should I add?

Well I've set it out so that you can see what's happening with the volume faders. :) They are clearly marked with the hue regions they correspond to.

Anyway!

I know it's a bit weird, but it was a fun idea. ONE DAY when I've tweaked it to perfection and/or I am very rich (erm...) I will connect it up to a touch screen. Cos I think that would be fun. ^.^

  • Does this mean there are 15 soundfiles and you can mix and filter them by interacting with the colourwheel image?

  • yes that's exactly what is happening. :)
