From the movie: Tous les matins du monde
Some Info: Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687) Italian-born composer (French nationality from 1681). Entered service of Louis XIV 1653, composed instrumental music for the court ballets. From 1664 collaborated with Molière in series of comedy-ballets which were forerunners of French opera, the last and most famous being Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, in which Lully danced role of the Mufti. Having assimilated both Italian and French styles and tastes, from 1673 he turned to opera composition and obtained from the King exclusive rights to arrange operatic performances in Paris. His death was caused by a gangrenous abscess which formed in his foot after he struck it with the long staff he used for beating time on the floor while conducting a Te Deum to celebrate Louis XIV's recovery from illness.

The deceptively simple facial expression of Depardieu admits of a hundred emotions - the man is a true genius, that scene alone should have earned him an Oscar. You can see the inner turmoil as he considers the contents of the letter - his eyes drift away from his orchestra, and with a single movement of his brow, he sums up all that was lost.

It was more like curiosity&envy but ofc humiliation too.In 17th century, France and Turkey was the biggest allies because Turkey was the sole power who might possibly destroy German Hapsburg empire.Ottoman army, their military music band and their red clothes was some kind of inspiration for European&French intellectuals for creating red colored French army suits and writing the very first French military marches. I believe it is a myth that Lully died by striking his foot with the staff because it's use itself in that or any other period is also primarily a myth.

Why did he compose a song for Turkish ceremony? Was it for diplomatic purpose?

A request from his former teacher, La Columbe, to attend the death-bed of his daughter who is on the point of death, and with whom a younger Marais had had an affair and then deserted her. She is dying insane, from melancholia. He says 'Non', but the next scene seques into his carriage as it enters the gate of Columbe's home. You would really need to see the movie and to speak French to get the best out of this remarkable movie - all of it true.

Pre-1517: The Pope ordained "monks only" for the dispensing or Quality music to the public.
1517-1960; Martin Luther said; "No way! Music belongs to the People"; it was now possible (but not likely) that lowlife street vermin would also be singing in church (except you could barely hear them).
1960-2012- then came Karaoke; now any street vermin could gesticulate wildly in font of a microphone while ubiquitous modern chem food monopoly assures he will have a perpetual audience of Dumbfuckers.
