Betjeman's reading of Larkin's poetry brings a whole new dimension to it. It's like hearing Elvis sing the Beatles, or vice versa. 'Churchgoing' has to be one of the best poems of the 20th century. I'm still not sure what 'natureless in ecstasies' means in 'The Large Cool Store' however.

Wonderful shot of the children and the dog in the graveyard. Could never have been staged.

I lived in Hull during the 60's; had heard PL reading this poem on the BBC, persuaded one of his staff to get me a copy of it. Betjeman reads it perfectly, as if he had written it himself. Love the bit about the removal of the cycle clips.

I'm going to be using this for my undergraduate dissertation! If only there were a full set of subtitles!
