Hejnal Mariacki : Krakow Trumpeter in the Tower at St Mary's Basilica

In this video you will see my wife & I going to the top of the Tower at St. Mary's Basilica in Krakow, Poland. I am American & my wife is from Poland. You'll see my wife show off her bi-lingual abilities chatting with me while taking the video & chatting to the Trumpeter while getting his autograph. The tradition is as follows: Every hour the trumpeter rings the Church Bell & then plays his instrument. This is because Krakow was attacked by Mongolians in the year 1241. The trumpeter played to warn the people of Krakow but was killed while playing. This is why when you hear the trumpeter playing he seems to stop in the middle of his song ( titled: Hejnal mariaki ). It is to commemorate the trumpeter who died in 1241. He plays 4 times every hour (from the North, South, East, & West windows of the tower). I recorded 2 of the 4 in this video & then went back down the stairs as it can get crowded up there. We really enjoyed this trip & I highly recommend it to anyone. I hope you enjoy the video.

Not sure if he plays the polka. He probably can though. He seems very talented. Thanks for the first comment to my first post on YouTube. This certainly was a moving experience. At some point in the next few weeks when I have some time I plan to post video of inside the Basilica which was absolutely amazing. I do feel blessed to have been able to have this experience.

Does he play polka too? I remember when I heard Hejnal for the first time. Very moving. Never got up that church steeple. Lucky you.
